Power Surge: Amba and Kumbhe Projects Scaled Up to 2,600 MW

The Maharashtra government has signed a revised memorandum of understanding (MoU) with NTPC to enhance the capacity of the Amba and Kumbhe pumped storage hydropower projects in Raigad district.

The updated agreement increases the combined capacity of the two projects from 1,800 MW to 2,600 MW—an addition of 800 MW—following detailed technical assessments by NTPC that confirmed the feasibility of higher output.

Under the revised plan, the Amba project’s capacity will be expanded from 800 MW to 1,500 MW, while the Kumbhe project will increase from 1,000 MW to 1,100 MW. The MoU was formalized in the presence of Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and senior NTPC officials.

This expansion aligns with Maharashtra’s broader push to develop hydropower under a public-private partnership (PPP) model. So far, the state has signed 60 MoUs under this initiative, targeting a total capacity of 82,015 MW and attracting an estimated investment of ₹4.28 lakh crore.
